Many thanks again to @officialdilemma,@beanofrench@iamanniemiller, and@jessi_j25 for dropping by my first section of #HipHopandBlackCulture at@templeuniv this past Thursday. Dilemma discussed his decade-plus career in music, his creative process, some of the artists with whom he has worked (@blackthought@meekmill,@jsullivanmusic@migos@bizzle, et al), how he defines success, and he premiered new music. Beano and Annie discussed their process in creating Beano’s beloved new ep #JustBeano. Beano also gave away two tickets to his sold out show (which I heard was one to remember).

"Don’t allow social media, outside noise, and even those close to you to define your success. Define your own success and what that looks like for you! Don’t be afraid to be flexible with the path and process. The “perfect situation” never looks perfect at 1st."

If you don’t like it, change it, if you don’t know how, YouTube it and figure it out, if it’s not on YouTube, kill your ego, humble yourself and ask ($$) someone who does it better to teach you, then shut up, take notes, listen, apply it, get better at it, then flip it and make it your own" #helloworld

FEAR || Not Enough

FEAR || Not Enough

Fear is very interesting, most people refuse to admit that it’s something we all deal with every day. Maybe it's the fear of it making them look weak or embarrassed, two things I can totally relate to.

Be honest, if a person were to open up and tell you what they really were fearful of, you might be surprised. As silly or as strange as it is, some people have a fear of loving, being successful, doing the right thing, walking in purpose, the fear to speak up, fear to lead a family, or the fear to show an outward personality.

Fear to me is that little voice in your head that tries to convince you that you'll fail, and that it'll hurt your ego, it'll hurt your brand, and it'll hurt your pockets. That voice that tries to tell you, you're not good enough, not talented enough, you did it once but you can't do it again, you're doing too much take a seat, you're not smart enough, you don't have enough experience, you don’t have enough money, you're too old, you're too young, you're in the wrong city, you're black, you're fat, who's going to help you, no one cares, you don't have a team and my favorite one, you're not "marketable" enough. I know I'm not the only one that hears that voice time and time again.

I know the bible says "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." And to be totally honest when I remember that, it cancels 98% of those little thoughts, but that 2% that’s still left is alive and still loud!

Sometimes you have to remind yourself of the things that you have overcome that you were once afraid to do big or small. This year I made it a personal goal of mine to step out and face as many fears big or small that I didn't realize were in me. (Minus skydiving, I'm good on that one.)  Over the weekend I took another step. It's funny how God puts situations in front of you to either face it or hide. Now the crazy part about taking each step is, you start to want what you were once afraid of more. You start to look for opportunities to take more steps, to silence that last 2% ... be encouraged everyone...faith walk.

Well my fellow crate diggers, this is the final #SundaeSample mix! Have you enjoyed the ride so far? I’d love to know what you thought about the mixes so make sure to leave a comment on Soundcloud or down below on the blog.

Did you guess the sample right for A$AP Rocky’s “Peso?” I think someone guessed it right on my Instagram! Nonetheless, this week’s mix is taking you on a world tour! See the great thing about hip hop is that it doesn’t just pull from soul music. It pulls from influences all over the world. This week’s mix is giving you a taste of that versatility.

Though this may be the end of the series for a moment, don’t worry, there may just be more to come with #sundaesamples so stay tuned. Also, feel free to share some of your favorite sampled records with me as well!

Take a listen and again, let me know what you think. And don’t be afraid to spread the word and share
